Diversity and Inclusiveness

The School specifically fosters a multicultural community and teaches appreciation of our differences as well as recognition of our essential unity. We seek to provide an educational experience that includes the goal of freedom from prejudice through understanding. In May of 1995, the Board of Trustees adopted the following statement on diversity:

The Catlin Gabel School's classroom and campus environment offers the opportunity to learn from the diversity of all community members. Such learning is premised upon mutual appreciation and respect. By participating in such a community, our students are better learners and more responsible citizens.

The recognition of differences, in terms of ethnicity, race, religion, socioeconomic status, gender or sexual orientation, is not an end in itself. Rather, this recognition provides a means through which the community is enriched, bringing to the whole a diversity of voices that seek to understand each other, and work together.

Because a reasoned search for truth and wisdom is informed by multiple perspectives, our diversity is the common ground upon which we seek to make this school and its opportunities equitable, just, and affirming. We commit ourselves to an active pursuit and continuing examination of the various means by which diversity can become a core feature of each child's education.

We expect that all community members will support diversity at Catlin Gabel School.

We ask your awareness and effort to give every member of the School community a sense of belonging. This may mean greeting a newcomer, including someone who is learning English, appreciating the opportunity to learn about an unfamiliar religious observance, or protecting the handicapped parking space for a person who requires it. It can mean sensitivity to differences in economic level. It can mean seeking common ground when your point of view collides with another.
